Music in Ireland on the Agenda for Oireachtas Committee Today

Representatives of music education organisations to speak at committee meeting.

Today (23 May 2018) at 1.30pm, the Oireachtas Committee on Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht will meet to discuss the topic of music in Ireland today.

Appearing before the committee at the meeting will be representatives of DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama, Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, the Irish Chamber Orchestra’s Sing Out With Strings project, and Music Generation. The meeting will focus on the issues of music accessibility and education.

The committee is chaired by Sinn Féin’s Peadar Tóibín, who said ahead of the meeting:

Music in all its forms plays an important role in our society and can have an uplifting effect on people’s lives, whether it is through listening or participation. Therefore it is vital that music is accessible to all and that music education is available to all.

The committee membership is formed of six other TDs – Séan Canney, Michael Collins, Danny Healy-Rae, Martin Heydon, Éamon Ó Cuiv and Niamh Smyth, and four senators, Maura Hopkins, Marie-Louise O’Donnell, Aodhán Ó Ríordáin and Fintan Warfield.

The meeting can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV, or through the Houses of the Oireachtas app.
