The Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Heather Humphreys TD, has announced that she has appointed six new members to the Board of the Arts Council, among them the fiddle-player Paddy Glackin.

Glackin has been a prominent traditional music performer and recording artist since the 1970s and was also a presenter of the celebrated The Pure Drop traditional music television show.

A founding member of Seachtar, which became The Bothy Band, Glackin has released several influential albums, including Glackin (1977), Doublin’ with Paddy Keenan (1978), Hidden Ground with Jolyn Jackson (1980), the solo album In Full Spate (1991), and Séidean Sí with Robbie Hannan (1995). More recently, he has been performing in a duet with Dónal Lunny; in a trio with Liam O’Flynn and Seán Keane; and with the bands Usher’s Island (Andy Irvine, Mike McGoldrick, John Doyle, Lunny and Glackin) and LAPD (O’Flynn, Irvine, Glackin and Lunny). The fiddle-player, from Dublin, is also a former presenter of the radio programme The Long Note and subsequently held a number of senior management roles in RTÉ.

The other five appointments to the Council are Damien Downes, former Chief Executive of the Kilkenny Arts Festival, and Secretary and Registrar at the National College of Art and Design; Loughlin Deegan, Director and Chief Executive of the Lir Academy; Martina Moloney, former Galway and Louth County Manager; Pádraig Ó Duinnín, Director of Lumiere Events and a former Acting Director at the Belfast Festival; and Helen Shaw, Managing Director of Athena Media, and former Managing Director of RTÉ Radio.

All of the appointees applied for the positions and were recommended through the Public Appointments Service. In total, 144 applications were received following a call for submissions last July.

The new appointees will join the existing members of the board, who are: Sheila Pratschke (Chair), Miriam Dunne, Brian Maguire, John McAuliffe, Emer O’Connor, Monica Spencer and Joan Sheehy.
