£3.89m for Music, Opera and Traditional Arts Organisations in Northern Ireland

Ulster Orchestra’s Music Room project

£3.89m for Music, Opera and Traditional Arts Organisations in Northern Ireland

Ulster Orchestra, NI Opera, Dumbworld and Belfast Trad among recipients.

The Arts Council of Northern Ireland has announced the recipients of its annual funding programme for 2017/18. From a total of just over £13 million (with £8.4m coming from exchequer grants for core running costs, and an additional £4.7m from National Lottery funds for programming), music and opera organisations received a total of £3,162,332Traditional arts organisations received £730,048.

Arts Council NI Chief Executive Roisín McDonough stated that the grants awarded this year experienced an overall cut due to a reduction in Exchequer funding.

The financial awards that we are announcing… represent overall a 2-4% cut in annual funding for the overwhelming number of our arts organisations. In the context of an uncertain funding environment, this announcement of £13 million will support the valuable work our artists and arts organisations deliver for the benefit of everyone in Northern Ireland.

With the Arts Council’s National Lottery funding focused on arts programming costs, we can help protect elements of each art form, including theatre, dance, music, literature and more. On that note, our annually funded arts organisations are to be congratulated for proposing an inspirational range of arts events and activities for the year ahead, delivered to people right across Northern Ireland and beyond.
