Steve Wickham, Erlend Viken Trio, Gilles Apap at 25th Baltimore Fiddle Fair

Waterboys violinist, now performing with NoCrows, also played the first festival in 1992.

This May the Baltimore Fiddle Fair in West Cork marks its 25th anniversary with a programme of international and Irish acts. The Fair started in 1992 as a small weekend of events based in McCarthy’s pub; since McCarthy’s was sold in 2004, the Fair moved outwards to take place in venues around Baltimore. This year’s festival takes place from 3 to 7 May and also features workshops, exhibitions and traditional sessions.

Among this year’s performers is Steve Wickham, currently playing with folk collective NoCrows. Wickham is the only featured artist to have also performed at the first ever Baltimore Fiddle Fair. Also on the programme are Altan, the Erlend Viken Trio, Allison de Groot with dancer Nic Gareiss, Buttons and Bows, Gilles Apap with Myriam Lafargue, and a trio of Derek Hickey, Karen Hickey and Caoimhín Ó Fearghaill.

Five workshops for advanced players with master fiddle players will take place during the festival, beginning with Gilles Apap at 4pm on 5 May; Tim O’Brien (11am), Chris Stout (2pm) and Erlend Viken (5pm) on 6 May; and Karen Hickey on 7 May. These workshops cost €20 and last 90 minutes.
