Ann Cleare Wins Darmstadt Composition Award

The Irish composer Ann Cleare has been selected as one of three composers to receive the Staubach Honoraria this year. The award, run by the Internationale Ferienkurse für Musik in Darmstadt, Germany, functions as a commission for a new work, with the premiere taking place during the 2014 Darmstadt festival.

Cleare was selected for the award from over 130 submissions, along with Marina Khorkova from Russia and Steven Daverson from the UK. Martin Iddon, Hans Thomalla and Thomas Schäfer all sat on this year’s jury. The competition happens every two years with applications open to composers between the ages of eighteen and thirty-five.

Cleare, from County Offaly, is currently pursuing a PhD in Composition at Harvard University under Chaya Czernowin and Hans Tutschku.
