Arts in Action Programme at NUI Galway

On Friday, 11 November piper Ronan Browne, contemporary dancer Cindy Cummings, singer Seán Tyrrell, sean-nós singer Róisín Elsafty and bodhrán player Tommy Hayes will perform together in the Bailey Allen Hall at NUI Galway.

Arts in Action is a programme of creative arts for the students of National University of Ireland, Galway (NUI Galway), run by the College to cultivate a greater awareness of the performing arts among students of all academic disciplines.

It includes performances and lectures, many free of charge, in a variety of art forms and at venues both on and off campus, aiming at an accessible and enjoyable programme both for the experiences in and of themselves but also as part of particular academic courses.

Students participating in Arts in Action as part of their academic programmes include first year students in Medicine taking the module Medicine and the Arts, second year students of the BA (Omnibus) English taking the Exploring the Creative Arts module, and first year Accountancy students in the College of Business, Public Policy and Law taking the pilot module the Art of Good Communication.

So far this year, artists such as pianist Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin and writer Kevin Barry have performed in the series, and this week the latest installment is a combined performance of music, song, sean-nós singing and contemporary dance.

On Friday, 11 November, from 1pm to 2pm, piper Ronan Browne, contemporary dancer Cindy Cummings, singer Seán Tyrrell (pictured above), sean-nós singer Róisín Elsafty and bodhrán player Tommy Hayes will perform together in the Bailey Allen Hall at NUI Galway.

The week after, on 18 November, Frankie Gavin and Máirtín O’Connor are joined by Carl Hession for a performance at the same venue.
