Campaign to Boost Philanthropy in Ireland

Arts organisations are encouraged to participate in a new campaign that aims to promote philanthropy in the general population. The One Per Cent Difference campaign, run by Philanthropy Ireland, hopes to inspire Irish people to give 1% of their income to community, voluntary and charitable organisations.

‘The problem isn’t that we don’t give,’ say Philanthropy Ireland. ‘On the contrary, in terms of frequency of giving, we’re consistently acknowledged as one of the most charitable nations in the world. The problem is that we don’t give in a considered and sustained manner which would enable charities and worthy causes to plan over the long term.’

The Arts Council this week wrote to organisations around the country to emphasise how the campaign can benefit arts organisations. ‘This campaign is shaping up to change people’s behaviour, and we would like the arts to benefit in a big way,’ said Orlaith McBride, Director of the Arts Council.

Organisations wishing to take part in the campaign need to apply here by 4pm on 29 May.

Philanthropy Ireland is an association of independent philanthropic organisations in Ireland, including grant-making trusts and foundations. Established in 1998 as a voluntary and informal network called the Funders’ Forum, the organisation attained charitable status in 2004 and changed its name to Philanthropy Ireland.
