Can You Electronically Reproduce the Sound of the Uilleann Pipes?

Is it possible to electronically reproduce the sound of the uilleann pipes?

Have a listen below to a track from Kavan Donohoe’s new EP

A harpist and uilleann piper, Donohoe here plays a set of vPipes, an instrument developed by Ramón M. Castro and Jose A. García in Madrid.

The vPipes-Uilleann is an electronic uilleann pipes emulator, affording the possibility of practising or performing in situations that might prove impractical with a real set of pipes.

Pipers have always battled with fluctuating temperatures when performing around the world. The vPipes overcome this problem, they can easily be plugged into a PA, and they also allow the musician perform in any key.

Is this a solution for uilleann pipers? Is it simply the equivalent of the keyboard to the piano?

vPipes retail at 1,490 euro (excl. VAT and p&p).
