Flamencología at the Helix

Flamencología at the Helix

Flamencología is a Compañía Felipe de Algeciras production paying homage to the roots of flamenco.

In terms of elaborate presentation and marketing, flamenco has reached Riverdance levels in recent times. An international industry of classes, shows and competitions has built up around the art form. Yet, like Irish dance, flamenco has more modest origins.

Flamencología, at the Helix on Saturday, 19 November, presented by Peña Flamenca El Indalo, the organisers of Dublin Flamenco Festival, takes a more traditional approach. It is a Compañía Felipe de Algeciras production paying homage to the roots of flamenco. Involving just three performers — Felipe de Algeciras (dance), Olayo Jiménez (voice) and Pedro Viscomi Martín ‘Patilla’ (guitar) — Flamencología is an exploration of the origins of the music, the dancing and the singing, presented as they would have been in the communities of southern Spain in years gone by.

To this end, many older forms, such as the Trilla, Martinete (see below), Abandolaos and Solea, feature; and more traditional presentations are employed, including unaccompanied singing, and dance accompanied only by singing and clapping.

The performance will be preceded at 7pm by a free class with the artists, introducing the audience to flamenco rhythm and clapping. Registration for this free optional extra is required as places are limited.

Courtesy of Peña Flamenca El Indalo The Journal of Music has a pair of tickets for the main show at 8.30pm to give away to one reader. Email paul [at] journalofmusic.com before 5pm on Friday, 11 November to enter. The winner will be notified on Monday, 14 November.
