Sligo Live, taking place on 24–29 October this year, has announced Joan Armatrading as its headline artist. Armatrading will perform at the new Knocknarea Arena at Sligo IT on 27 October 2012. Sligo Live co-producer Shane Mitchell said it has long been an ambition of the festival to host the Birmingham-raised singer: ‘When we started Sligo Live seven years ago, Joan Armatrading was one of our top choices. She was keen to play Sligo, but it has taken this long to find a suitable date. Joan is a fantastic live performer who really enjoys communicating with her audience.’
Born in St Kitts in the West Indies, Armatrading moved to England when she was seven. She taught herself to play guitar and began writing songs at the age of fourteen. Since then, she has released nineteen albums and was the first black UK artist to be nominated for a Grammy in the blues category.
Tickets are €35 and €95 for the whole Sligo Live weekend if you book early.
