National Music Education Programme

Music Generation, the new Irish national agency for music development, has announced details of the National Music Education Programme. The new programme is supported by a €5 million donation from U2, as well as a €2 million donation from the Ireland Funds.

Administered by Music Network, the scheme aims to develop music education in Ireland by providing music teachers throughout the country, by supporting musical performances and by funding local administrative and infrastructural resources. The deadline for the first round of applications to the scheme is Thursday, 31 March 2011.

Commenting on U2’s involvement in the scheme, guitarist The Edge said, ‘Even if you choose not to make [music] your job, learning music is proved to have a hugely positive affect on society in general.’ Dr. Tony Ó Dálaigh, Chairman of Music Generation, said that the new programme will change the lives of thousands of children and young people in Ireland.
