New Choral Appointments at RTÉ

New appointments to the RTÉ Philharmonic and Cór na nÓg, as well as a Conductor in Training for the coming seasons.

RTÉ Performing Groups have announced three new appointments to positions within the choral performing groups.

Mark Hindley is the new Chorus Master for the RTÉ Philharmonic Choir, a position which he will hold for the next three seasons, from September 2012 to May 2015. Works which he will be preparing over the coming seasons include Verdi’s Four Sacred Pieces, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in D minor, and J.S. Bach’s St. John Pasion. Hindley has been Chorus Master with a number of choirs in the past, such as Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Leeds Philharmonic Society, and has worked with Huddersfield Choral Society, Edinburgh Festival Chorus, and Royal Scottish National Orchestra. He is also a freelance organist and harpsichordist.

Mary Amond O’Briend will be extending her contract as Choral Director of RTÉ Cór na nÓg, which she began this past season. Well known for her past career as an international athlete, Mary also formed the Carlow-based children’s choir Aspiro, and is a composer and arranger of choral music.

Trinity College student Lynsey Callaghan has been chosen as Conductor in Training for 2012-2014 in partnership with the Association of Irish Choirs. A Music Education student, Lynsey has also completed a year’s study at the Zoltan Kodaly Pedagogical Institute of Music. As well as singing with a number of choirs, she has conducted the Boydell Singers and two school choirs. In July 2012 she also conducted an Irish Youth Choir performance in Dublin. She will be mentored and trained by both Mark Hindley and Greg Bearsall, the current conductor of the Irish Youth Choir.
