This is My Will
The Irish Youth Choir (IYC) launched This is my will, a CD of sacred music by Spanish composer Angel Climent, on Saturday October 13th, 2001, in Cork. Conducted by founder-director of the IYC, Geoffrey Spratt, the CD features the composer accompanying on the organ, and soloists Helen Hassett (soprano), Bridget Knowles (mezzo-soprano) and Robert Craig (tenor). ‘This is my will’ features three settings of the Mass, and a number of motets, in Latin and English, and will be available from music shops nationwide and directly from Cumann Náisiúnta na gCór/Association of Irish Choirs. Mostly Modern
The Mostly Modern Series will run from November 8th 2001 through to April 11th 2002 with concerts held on Thursday every two weeks or so. Admission is free to all events. The line-up for November/ December is as follows: 8/11: John Buckley/James Wilson Birthday Celebration performed by Vox 21. 22/11: Síle Daly (Oboe), works by Holliger, Ichiyanagi, Berio and Becker. 6/12: Irish ensemble Quatrain perform works by Toru Takemitsu. Concorde
Concorde’s international activities continue with concerts at the Festival SpazioMusica in Cagliari, Sardinia in December. Concorde will be ensemble in residence for RTE’s Composer of the Future Competition next February.

The Future of Music Education
The Forum for Music in Ireland meets on 9 November 2001 in Dublin City University for a plenary meeting. Mr John Dennehy, Secretary General, Dept of Education and Science, will give a keynote address on ‘The Future of Music Education’ and Ms Ann O’Connell, Chairperson, Music Board of Ireland, will talk about the brief of the board and its aims.

Music teacher database
Are you a teacher of classical, jazz or traditional music? If so, Music Network would like to hear from you and to involve you in its latest information initiative – the first online database of private instrumental/vocal music teachers offering classical, traditional and jazz tuition in Ireland north and south. It is hoped that this directory will be a valuable resource for parents, students of all ages, teachers and others interested in the development of music in their area. The Quartetto Prometeo
The Quartetto Prometeo from Italy play quartets by Scubert, Brahms and contemporary Italian composer Salvatore Sciarrino at the Aula Maxima on 20 November. The NSO with composer Gerhard Markson and pianist John O’Conor perform Mozart and Strauss at Leisureland on the 27th.

Dates for the Association of Irish Composers Autumn Concerts Series are as follows (All concerts in the Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin, start time 12 noon): 4/11 Musica Mirabilis: Danish violinist Christine Pryn with pianist Joachim Olsson perform a programme of young Danish composers (Carsten Bo Eriksen, Ib Nørholm) mixed with such names as Lutoslawski, Berio and Maderna.11/11 Derek Ball Retrospective Concert (with the Saltire Quartet): Shrub (1973), Mary’s Piece (1990/99), For Charlie (1994) Working Through (1989/99), Cuttings (1996). 18/11 The Irish Scene: A concert devoted to younger Irish composers. 25/11 Rolf Hind: British pianist and celebrated exponent of the contemporary repertoire, with a programme of new international and Irish music. Talks by Tim Thurston
As part of the NCH Education and Community Outreach Programme, Tim Thurston is giving a series of 6 free-standing lunchtime sessions lasting 55 minutes at Newman House, St Stephen’s Green (southside). He will explore and talk about the rich variety of music that surrounds us – covering repertoire spanning more than 1000 years. This course is for anyone interested in broadening the itinerary of their musical journey.
