Folk Music Society of Ireland
The Folk Music Society of Ireland has published the latest issue of its journal Irish Folk Music Studies - Éigse Cheol Thíre vols 5-6, a double number containing articles, book reviews, record reviews, and a bibliography and discography covering the period 1985 to 2000 inclusive. The volume is edited by Hugh Shields, Nicholas Carolan and Thérése Smith. The articles are: `Memories of dancing in West Clare and beyond’ by Michael Tubridy; ‘The study of oral traditions of music’ by Dr Thérése Smith; ‘The much admired, remarkable & true story of “The gallant female sailor” or “Ann Jane Thornton”’ by John Moulden; ‘Philip O’Sullivan Beare on Irish music’ by Nicholas Carolan; `Collecting songs “by hand” in the fifties’ by Dr Hugh Shields. Thirteen important books and thirty-five sound recordings are also reviewed by a variety of performers and scholars. A select classified bibliography 1985-2000, compiled by Hugh Shields, Maeve Gebruers and Nicholas Carolan, contains 423 entries. A select classified discography 1985-2000, compiled by Nicholas Carolan, Joan McDermott and Thérése Smith, contains 558 entries. The bibliography and discography, which are based on the holdings of the Irish Traditional Music Archive, are controlled by a name index compiled by Lisa Shields. Context Gallery opportunity
The Contemporary Music Centre and the Context Gallery would like to hear from composers who are interested in collaborating with a visual artist on a site-specific sound/visual exhibition/installation for the Context Gallery to be held February 2003. The deadline for proposals is 30th March 2002. Proposals are welcome from: 1. Composers who have already worked with a named visual artist with whom they would like to collaborate again. 2. Composers who would like to work with a named visual artist by whom they have been influenced or whose work interests them. 3. Composers who are open to collaborating with a visual artist without naming any specific artist. Sligo Contemporary Music Festival
The Model Arts and Niland Gallery in Sligo has revealed the full programme for the fifth Contemporary Music Festival taking place over the Easter weekend from Friday 29 March to Sunday 31 March. The theme of this year’s festival is the relationship between the composer and the performance, looking forward and back from the piece of music. There is a distinctive Dutch influence, inspired by renowned soprano Judith Mok, performing the work of two of Holland’s most renowned composers, Louis Andreissen and Theo Leovendie. The curator of IS NOW, Benjamin Dwyer, will perform his own large scale work for guitar Twelve Études and the winning piece of the Sligo Performers Competition will be performed on Easter Sunday. Audiences will also be treated to strong contributions from Irish composers throughout the weekend. Eric Sweeney’s Déise Dé
Enchiriadis Treis, together with Cantairí Mhuscairí, are performing Eric Sweeney’s Déise Dé in the National Concert Hall on Saturday, April 27th, at 8.00pm. The conductor is Marion Doherty and the soloists are Ailish Tynan and Philip O’Reilly. The pianists are Brian McKay and Patrick Zuk. The percussionists will come from Cork. The other item in the programme is Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle, which will be conducted by Maria Judge. Soloists are Ailish Tynan, Cora Newman, Emmanuel Lawlor, Philip O’Reilly. Are you a music lover? Are you concerned with the provision for music in Ireland? Does your work involve fighting for support for music? Do you need a network to share solutions and problems? The Forum’s aims are: 1. To create an active network of those interested in music in Ireland. 2. To give a voice to music in Ireland and to influence action in support of it. The Forum for Music in Ireland is an independent voluntary umbrella body founded in 1999 to represent organisations and individuals in the fields of traditional, classical, contemporary, rock, popular and jazz music. Membership of the Forum is open to all organisations and individuals, whether professional or amateur, working in or concerned with music in Ireland. The Forum welcomes people working at all levels and in all areas across the whole spectrum of music-making.
