JMI Seeks Marketing Executive
JMI welcomes letters of application for the new post of Marketing & Promotions Executive. The position shall involve promoting the magazine at major music events throughout Ireland and developing new marketing initiatives. A part-time role, working from home on a flexi-time basis, the successful applicant shall have a full driving licence and own transport. Applicants should have a good knowledge of musical life in Ireland, marketing or promotions experience, and excellent communication and organisational skills. Tom Munnelly – Writings Online
Singer, collector and authority on traditional singing, Tom Munnelly has died after a long illness. Born in Dublin but resident in Miltown Malbay, Co Clare, since 1978, Munnelly made the largest field-collection of Irish traditional song ever compiled by any individual.

After recording privately in the 1960s, and collecting especially from Traveller singers, he became a professional folklore collector and archivist with the Department of Irish Folklore, University College Dublin. Munnelly, founding Chairman of the Irish Traditional Music Archive, was a leading activist in many folk music organisations and festivals and also served on the Arts Council. Recently he was presented with the festschrift Dear Far-Voiced Veteran: Essays in Honour of Tom Munnelly, and received an honourary doctorate from NUI Galway. An Béal Binn
This series of Irish-language evenings is organised by sean-nós singer Róisín Elsafty. Anyone interested in the Irish language and traditional music and song is welcome to attend the Béal Binn club night every Thursday in the Bray Sailing Club at Bray Harbour. PHFNM 07
The second Printing House Festival of New Music takes place in Trinity College, Dublin on 15/16 December. The Festival looks at music written since the death of American composer Morton Feldman in 1987, and features performances from Aki Takahashi, Rohan De Saram, Marc Sabat, RIAM Percussion Ensemble, Dublin Guitar Quartet, Ronan Guilfoyle and Ensemble Imp. New work has been commissioned from Irish composers Seán Clancy, Aengus Ó Maoláin and Donnacha Dennehy. Visit www.printinghousefestival.com

Tara Harpers
A large body of Irish harpers has joined the campaign to reroute the controversial M3 motorway away from archeological sites at Tara, Co. Meath, claiming that ‘the sites currently under threat are inextricably linked with the harping and bardic traditions for more than 2,500 years.’ On 22 September the group (left) staged a protest at Dáil Éireann. On the following day, over 1500 people dressed in white gathered at the Hill of Tara to form a giant harp under the direction of aerial artist John Quigley. Visit www.myspace.com/taraharpers

New Books
Two major new books on music in Ireland have recently been published: a biography of the sean-nós singer  Seosamh Ó hÉanaí by Liam Mac Con Iomaire, Seosamh Ó hÉanaí:  Nár Fhágha Mé Bás Choíche, published by Cló Iar-Chonnachta (www.cic.ie), and the ninth book in the Irish Musical Studies series – Music in Nineteenth-Century Ireland, edited by Michael Murphy and Jan Smaczny and published by Four Courts Press (www.four-courts-press.ie).

Cork School of Music
The CIT Cork School of Music has moved into its new purpose-built premises on Union Quay. The new facility includes a library, 52 teaching/practice studios (all equipped with Steinway grand pianos), a 500-seater auditorium, a 100-seater drama theatre and recording and electronic music studios. Students range from 5 years of age to postgraduate level and the new move will also allow the School to give greater attention to drama. Visit www.cit.ie

William Kennedy Piping Fesival
Now in its fourteenth year, the William Kennedy Piping Festival has added a conference element to its programme. The Festival, which runs in Armagh Town on 14–18 November, will include numerous talks and lectures as well as concerts and sessions features pipers from Ireland, Bulgaria, Scotland, Galicia and the United States.
