Introductions to Contemporary Music

The Irish composer Seán Clancy has recently begun a series of posts on interesting pieces of contemporary music. Clancy explains the series:

Warum! Nicht Wie, which translates as Why! not how, is a fortnightly publication in which I will try to discuss one piece of music that has had a significant impact on me both as a listener and as a composer. Its purpose is twofold. Firstly, it is hoped that by discussing these pieces of music, people that are interested in my music might get a better picture of where I come from compositionally. Secondly, it is hoped that a greater awareness may be fostered about music that is either too recent to have been discussed in any great detail, or simply music that is often overlooked.

Beginning with Feldman’s For Philip Guston, and continuing with Andrew Hamilton’s Music for People Who Like Art), the posts contain sound clips and related materials. Definitely worth checking out.
