Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy In Images

With the Willie Clancy summer school just started, there is possibly no better record of what it’s all about than the photographs of Tony Kearns. Since 1992 Kearns has been taking photographs of the musicians, singers and dancers at the Scoil Samhraidh.

Supported by the Arts Council under its Deis Traditional Arts Initiative collection of Kearns’ photographs taken at the Willie Clancy Summer School is available in a hardback book called Music and Light - Ceol agus Solas. The book contains 130 black and white photographs of classes, sessions, recitals, ceilis and formal portraits from 1992 to 2007. The book also features a foreword by Nicholas Carolan, director of the Irish Traditional Music Archive, as well as an introduction by the directors of the Summer School Harry Hughes and Muiris Ó Rócháin

Muiris is being remembered this year in a special event, Ómós do Mhuiris Ó Rócháin on Tuesday, 10 July at 3pm: an afternoon of music, song, story, dance and folklore in memory of the late co-founder and director of Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy, presented by Muireann Ní Dhuigneáin.
