How I discovered this artist:

Saw them at Vantastival in 2018

Why I gave the above rating:

Thumper’s new track ‘Topher Grace’ was named after the actor from That 70’s Show, though the song has no correlation to him other than that. Unlike previous tracks from the hard rock-pop band from Dublin, ‘Topher Grace’ is long and sprawling, with no chorus and without the standard song format that we’re used to hearing. Instead, it’s an epic song-meets-spoken-word piece featuring singer Oisín Leahy Furlong pour out a narrative of intimate emotions about partying, drug use, self esteem and a yearning for closeness and stability; ‘I want to love, I want to give, I want to take and be taken care of’. The backdrop of a simple repetitive guitar hook suits as accompaniment to the vocals, allowing the words to be the main focus here. In terms of sound, it’s the guitar, bass and drum-heavy Thumper we know and love. Despite this not being the more standard, radio-friendly 3 minute pop song, ‘Topher Grace’ fits just as well in Thumper’s repertoire and marks a new level to their songwriting. It will go down just as well with audiences at live shows, and when Leahy Furlong whisper shouts the lyrics, I can just imagine being at their next gig, the crowd starving for a live show and Thumper belting this out.
