Andrea Gabrieli's Oedipus Rex

Andrea Gabrieli's Oedipus Rex

Sunday, 10 October 2021, 3.00pm

Chamber Choir Ireland presents Gabrieli's Oedipus Rex, originally composed for the 1585 revival of Sophocles' Ancient Greek masterpiece.

Taking on the role of the Greek chorus, the singers of Chamber Choir Ireland tell the tale of Oedipus, King of Thebes, as he hunts for the man who murdered the predecessor to his throne.

As the mystery unfolds, Oedipus uncovers what we in the audience know to be true, that he is doomed to the ironies of fate. He has already unwittingly fulfilled the prophecy delivered to him by an oracle long ago: that he would one day kill his own father and marry his mother.

Led by Artistic Director Paul Hillier, Chamber Choir Ireland perform this rarely heard work, Edipo Tiranno, offering all the best of Ancient Greek storytelling and Italian renaissance music, in what is a notable example of Gabrieli’s subtle and expressive use of harmonic colouring throughout.

Tickets must be purchased before midnight on Friday 8th October, and will not be available on the door. Groups wishing to sit together must book tickets in the same transaction.

Doors open at 2:15PM, concert to begin at 3PM. Please arrive at least 30 minutes before the beginning of the concert to allow the Chamber Choir Ireland team to seat audience members safely.
