Third Irish Old-Time Appalachian Music Gathering
A three-day gathering (21-23 February) of enthusiasts of Old-Time Appalachian music, which derived from the tunes and songs of settlers from Ireland, Scotland and England (and other influences) since the 1600s, and from which developed American folk, country and bluegrass. The Gathering is participative - only a nominal fee is required (register on the website) - comprising jam sessions and some workshops (instrumental, dance, shape-note singing). The instrumental sessions will be led by Clay Buckner, fiddler with the legendary Red Clay Ramblers from North Carolina. The singing and dance workshops are suitable for both beginners and the experienced. The dance workshop will be led by Jeremy Child, an experienced caller. Ross Harbison will lead the singing workshop - Shape Note is an American four part harmony folk singing tradition with songs dating from the 16-20th centuries, easy to learn and join in with. There will also be an informal concert and barndance on Saturday night –all welcome. The Gathering will be centered on the Roadside Tavern and adjacent Burren Storehouse, with other venues nearby.
