West Wicklow Chamber Music Festival: Eblana String Trio
The ‘splendidly stylish’ (Gramophone) Eblana String Trio has given countless performances throughout Ireland, the UK and beyond, winning praise for their powerful interpretations of unjustly neglected repertoire.
Programme:
Boccherini String Trio in D major, Op. 14 No. 4, G. 98
Hugh Wood Ithaka
Moeran String Trio in G
Mozart Divertimento in E flat major, K563
A virtuoso cellist of his time, the 18th century Italian composer Boccherini placed his own beloved instrument firmly at the heart of his Third String Trio’s captivating lyricism. Luckily Peggy Nolan is more than up to continuing the task at hand!
The music of Lancashire-born composer Hugh Wood is sometimes violently expressionistic, sometimes poignantly lyrical, and always powerfully communicative. His work Ithaka is inspired by a poem of the same name by the poet C.P. Cavafy and is a meditation on Ulysses’ homeward voyage.
The English composer Ernest Moeran was a student of both Charles Villiers Stanford and John Ireland. His charming String Trio dates from 1931 and is full of emotion and unusual rhythmic effects.
Simple melodies, employed to glorious effect, resulted in this Mozart’s extraordinary Divertimento: the work of a 31-year-old genius who would be dead by the tragically young age of 35.
