Phoenix 55, Nathalie Stutzmann @ Kilkenny Arts Festival 2019

Thursday, 15 August 2019, 7.30pm

Not only is contralto Nathalie Stutzmann ‘one of the great baroque singers of our day’ (Gramophone), she also enjoys a distinguished international career as a conductor (for the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, among others). For her Kilkenny debut, Stutzmann combines both talents, bringing her new ensemble Phoenix 55 (comprising musicians from her former ensemble, Orfeo 55) to St Canice’s to perform a very special programme of Bach cantatas.

Devotion takes sections from some of Bach’s greatest works – specially selected by Stutzmann – and recombines them to form a thrilling ‘new’ composition. This unique programme is a wonderful chance to hear the ‘best contralto in the world’ (BR Klassik) singing Bach’s timeless cantatas as you’ve never heard them before.
