Shelter Virtual Christmas Carol Concert

Shelter Virtual Christmas Carol Concert

Wednesday, 8 December 2021, 7.00pm

This December, housing and homelessness charity Shelter will host its second annual virtual carol concert to bring the nation together in an unforgettable evening of song in the run up to Christmas. The charity is encouraging concert-goers to come together with friends and family to enjoy the festivities from home and show their support for people facing homelessness this winter.

This year’s service will be hosted by Danni Menzies. She will be joined by a host of celebrities including Edith Bowman, Matt Allwright, Vick Hope and Nikki Amuka-Bird throughout the evening.

Shelter aims to match and exceed the success of last year’s inaugural virtual carol concert event, which attracted over 10,000 viewers.

This year’s ‘One Voice’ concert will be hosted in the candle-lit church of St Martin-in-the-Fields, where Shelter was founded in 1966. It will run for forty-five minutes and will be streamed via Shelter’s website on 8th December at 7pm.

Six songs will be sung in total by St Martin-in-the-Fields’ choral scholars, including festive favourites such as Ding Dong Merrily on High.

Shelter hopes concert-goers will make the evening all the more special by downloading a Recipe for Change from their website and cooking a home-made meal for family and friends to enjoy whilst watching the concert together. Each recipe has been created by someone who has experienced the devastating impact of the housing emergency first-hand. From Mariam’s curry to Shandor’s poppy seed cake, you’ll discover a new dish to cook and the story behind why it was important to these individuals when they were fighting for home.

The concert will be free to stream and any donations made will support Shelter’s frontline services and campaigning work to fight the devastating impact of the housing emergency. The event sponsors, Nationwide Building Society, will generously match fund donations up to £50k on the night - so every donation goes even further.

Participants can sign up for the carol concert for free via the Shelter website and the Shelter Scotland website.

Polly Neate, Shelter’s Chief Executive, says:

“Since the start of the pandemic, hundreds of thousands of people have been tipped into homelessness and are now facing a desperately uncertain future. Far too many people, including families with young children, are trapped in cramped, cold and unsafe temporary accommodation - places which are a million miles away from being a home.

“This winter, with Covid protections lifting and living costs soaring, sadly we could see even more people lose their homes. Our frontline services will continue to work tirelessly to help people find or keep hold of a home - but as growing numbers need our support, we need yours.

“The One Voice concert - our second national virtual carol concert - is a chance to stand together against this injustice and show your support for the families facing Christmas without a safe home. We’re looking forward to welcoming thousands of people as we gather together and sing in solidarity this festive season.”

More than 120,000 children in England spent last Christmas homeless and living in temporary accommodation. And right now, 91 families are still becoming homeless every day. The economic chaos of the pandemic has meant that many people are facing homelessness this year.

Shelter is fighting for everyone’s right to a safe home. The pandemic has affected thousands and put enormous strain on Shelter’s services, so the charity urgently needs your support.
