Droichead Arts Centre are delighted to participate in the Local Live Performance Scheme this May and June. The scheme began last year as an initiative of the Department to assist producers, promoters and venues to provide support for people in the industry to facilitate programming of live performances in 2022, animating town centres for local communities. Our first three live performances are available to book for free, featuring artists locally, and nationally. Watch out for two further dates in June, where we might even go outdoors! Free, but booking essential.

SOLO, curated by SJ McArdle, returns in May with two very special shows, presented as part of this Live Performance scheme. On May 27th Cork-based family trio Greenshine will appear with Drogheda’s beloved bard Seán Mathews in a masterful evening of song and storytelling.

Greenshine is a family trio comprising Noel Shine, Mary Greene and their daughter Ellie. Their material straddles the boundaries of contemporary, folk and roots and includes many self-penned songs. Their fast picking and close harmonies are a treat to the ear. The band is known for striking family harmonies and excellent musicianship.

Noel is a multi-instrumentalist, turning his hand to guitar, bass, mandolin, banjo, bouzouki and traditional whistle and this musical dexterity had seen him much in demand as a session and band player by artists as diverse as The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem and funk and soul legends The Republic of Loose amongst many others. Mary brings rhythm guitar to the mix and her voice is a wonderfully versatile instrument. She has added her talents to the albums of Christy Moore, John Spillane, Mick Hanly and Frances Black as well as cult psychedelic outfit Dr. Strangely Strange. Ellie Shine grew up surrounded by music and has been performing in concerts and festivals since the age of 13 including an appearance with GREENSHINE for President Michael D. Higgins and his wife Sabina at The Abbey Theatre. In 2013 Ellie joined the band officially and GREENSHINE was born.

Seán Mathews is a blend of the Folk Traditionalist, the Eclectic and the Demonstrator. He can polarise and galvanise. All while holding the fort in his hometown of Drogheda. Seán welcomed two baby girls into the world during the first Lockdown of 2020. It was during this time he wrote the final tracks on his upcoming second album, Welcome to Ballsgrove. Welcome to Ballsgrove will charge down the neighbourhood, take you away from there for a while and then slip you back there feeling good about the journey. The similarities of Drogheda to other Irish towns like Newry, Dundalk and Killarney are in that the Urban regularly meets the Rural. The concrete greets the cows. Or as Patrick Kavanagh would say, where the parochial meets the regional. This is the essence of Seán's upcoming second album, Welcome to Ballsgrove.
