Sea Shanties Singing Workshops for Adults

Thursday, 18 November 2021, 7.00pm

Siamsa Tíre is delighted to be hosting a Sea Shanties Singing Workshop for Adults. This workshop is ideal for people who enjoy singing in groups and are curious to learn a little more about the world of opera. Over the course of this two-hour workshop, participants will explore various pieces of music related to the Peter Maxwell Davies’ opera ‘The Lighthouse’ and gain a better context of the piece before Irish National Opera’s live performance of the work at Siamsa Tíre on 25th November at 8pm. You don’t need to have any experience of singing, reading music or of opera to take part. Just an enthusiasm to try something new!

This workshop can be booked as part of a Special Two Event Deal for both the workshop and 'The Lighthouse' opera performance.

Costs: Full: €40, Student 16+ €30.

The Lighthouse Opera

A Scottish lighthouse goes dark. A visiting supply ship finds the building in order. But the keepers have vanished without a trace. Written in 1979, this opera is inspired by a true event from December 1900 when three lighthouse keepers mysteriously disappeared from the Flannan Isles lighthouse in the Outer Hebrides in Scotland. The composer conjures up a psychological thriller in which cabin fever of three men confined in close proximity leads to explosions of their different personalities in ways that lead to tragedy.

An Irish National Opera touring production with a cast of three singers and 12 orchestral players, sung in English. The Lighthouse was last produced in Ireland over 20 years ago in performances by Opera Theatre Company in 1998 and 2001.
