BBC Philharmonic: David Matthews 80th Birthday Concert
The BBC Philharmonic is set to celebrate David Matthews’ 80th birthday with a concert on March 9, 2023. The concert, to be conducted by BBC Philharmonic Chief Conductor John Storgårds with baritone Marcus Farnsworth, will feature compositions from both Matthews and Franz Schubert. Matthews has had a productive relationship with the BBC Philharmonic for over 40 years. The birthday celebrations begin with Matthews’ recent Concerto for Orchestra, a piece inspired by the changing of the seasons. Matthews' Chaconne, commissioned by the BBC Philharmonic in 1988, will also be performed during the concert. Nachtgesang, inspired by the poetry of the German Romantic poet Goethe, is another Matthews composition receiving its first UK performance during the concert. The event will also feature some of Schubert’s settings of Goethe’s words in orchestrations by Reger and Brahms. The concert is part of the BBC Philharmonic Studio Concerts series.
