Why I gave the above rating:

'Chaila' by Denise Chaila comes after her stand out-performance as part of Other Voices' Courage series, in which she sang, spoke and danced in the National Gallery. This was one of the tracks she performed. Starting with a motif on strings that sets the beat and is played over and over again throughout, the upbeat and bouncy rhythm sets a backdrop as Chaila sings about her name and identity. Lyrics like 'I know my name and I know the path that I walk', and 'Don't need your concern if you'll look at me and see a Trocaire kid', convey a narrative that recurs throughout Chaila's work, of living in Ireland as black woman, a woman of multiple backgrounds and identities (Chaila was born in Zambia, and based in Limerick). It's a lively tune, with clever and astute lyrics and I look forward to an album of Chaila's music.
