Work Experience Opportunities in Regions within Radio, July to October 2019

Locations - Various BBC buildings across the Regions and Channel Islands

Opportunities available throughout July, August, September & October 2019


The BBC has placements available in the following areas:

Radio Beds, Herts & Bucks, Three Countries Radio (over 18)
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to gain experience of a wide variety of news and current affairs content for Radio from across Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire. You will learn from different teams on the radio station how they book guests and write briefs. You will get an insight into how reporters’ cover stories and conduct recorded vox pops.

Radio Cumbria (over 18)
Radio Cumbria provides an insight into researching, preparing and maybe reporting on a variety of news and programme stories.

Radio Devon (over 18)
Work Experience with BBC Radio Devon will give you the chance to work closely with both the Radio Station and teams from across the multi-media newsroom. We expect candidates to clearly demonstrate a commitment to working within the broadcast industry in their applications and will be especially interested in journalism candidates.

Radio Derby (over 18)
BBC Radio Derby has two types of work experience available:
News and sport - you’ll join our newsroom and sports teams and discover what’s involved in putting together a Breakfast programme, a news bulletin and sports commentary.
Programmes - You will shadow the production team of one of our daytime programmes.

Radio Gloucestershire (over 18)
The successful candidate will get an insight into all aspects of working at a radio station. You will learn how the team, research stories, record vox pops and set up guests. You’ll have a keen interest in radio production and an interest in telling stories about your community. Preference is given to applicants living or studying in Gloucestershire. One week or two week placements are available.

BBC Radio Guernsey & BBC Radio Jersey
BBC Channel Islands (over 18)
Come and experience life in one of our two multi-platform newsrooms in the Channel Islands. We offer placements in either Jersey or Guernsey (but you must be “entitled” to work in the island you choose).
This placement is aimed at those who have an interest in serving local audiences. Successful candidates may have a chance to watch the whole range of broadcast career opportunities that are available in local television, radio and digital. The States of Guernsey and States of Jersey insist candidates must be “entitled” to live and work in Guernsey/Jersey and/or have strong family connections with the island

Radio Lincolnshire - News (over 18)
A Placement with BBC Radio Lincolnshire’s news team. You’ll be involved A Placement with BBC Radio Lincolnshire’s news team. You’ll be involved in finding stories for programmes and news bulletins; spend time with newsreaders and see how a bulletin is put together and delivered on air; you’ll learn how to record and edit your own material and spend time with reporters out and about broadcasting live into our programmes

Radio Lincolnshire - Programmes (over 18)
A placement with BBC Radio Lincolnshire. You’ll get a chance to join producers and presenters as they prepare programmes for BBC Radio Lincolnshire – and you’ll be there whilst the programme’s on air. You’ll see how the team decide what to talk about on our programmes and how to track down the best guests to talk to. You’ll see how to record and edit features for our programmes; how we choose which songs to play and how to put together audio that promotes our programmes. You’ll also be given the chance to learn with a diverse range of people on our evening programmes – making unique radio for our communities.

Radio Nottingham (over 18)
You will spend your time with experienced journalists in our newsroom and get a close-up view about how our popular Andy and Sarah at Breakfast and Drive programmes is put together.

Radio Suffolk (over 18)
Experience an overview of local news journalism and radio programming involving observing and shadowing, plus you may get the opportunity to record and edit their own pieces.

Radio Sussex - Brighton (over 18)
BBC Sussex is pleased to offer placements at its Brighton headquarters, across a range of programmes, including our flagship Breakfast programme. You will get the chance to shadow our presenters and producers, along with the bulletins team and our Sussex reporter, who is deployed to stories across the county.

Radio Surrey - Guildford (over 18)
BBC Surrey is pleased to offer placements to gain experience primarily with our flagship Breakfast Show that goes out each weekday morning from 6 until 9. You will get the chance to shadow our presenter and producers, along with the bulletins team and our Surrey reporter, who is deployed to stories across the county.

Radio Wiltshire (over 18)
You will have the opportunity to join the news or program teams in a busy local radio newsroom serving the county of Wiltshire. You will see how programmes are compiled, shadow our reporters and see how a news bulletin is put together. You may even have the opportunity to learn how to produce your own audio for output on air under the guidance of BBC staff.

Radio York - News (over 18)

BBC Radio York has two types of work experience available:
News and sport – you’ll be in our newsroom for the duration of your placement, where we originate stories, go out reporting, conduct interviews and gather vox pops.  You will find out more about our editing software and recording equipment. You may also shadow our digital journalist.
