Inviting kids to listen, learn and love music…

The summer holidays are upon us, the kids are finished (virtual) school, but many of the usual children’s summer activities are on the Covid casualties list. If you’re at a loss trying to think of things to keep the little ones busy, Galway Music Residency (GMR) is ready to help.

Connecting Kids with ConTempo is a four-week initiative designed to help children engage with classical music in a fun and creative way. Beginning on 31st July, each Friday at 11am GMR will release a video featuring a short performance by ConTempo Quartet with an educational introduction. Different aspects of classical music are explored, from the composition of a string quartet to understanding a Waltz. Each week, the children are asked to listen to the music with specific questions in mind and are then invited to respond creatively to ConTempo’s performance through art, writing or anything else that comes naturally. The children’s creations can be sent to GMR to be displayed proudly on its social media and website. Though most suitable for primary school children, all ages are encouraged to enjoy these beautiful performances and delve a little deeper into the listening experience.

Connecting Kids with ConTempo can be found on GMR’s Facebook page (@thegalwaymusicresidency) or YouTube Channel (The Galway Music Residency). Participation is completely free, but donations are most welcome and will help GMR to create more online educational content in these difficult times. Donations can be made on individual Facebook posts or via
