From Europe with Love: Bulgaria

From Europe with Love: Bulgaria

Tuesday, 5 November 2019, 1.10pm

Lunchtime with ConTempo’s ambitious project, From Europe with Love continues on Tuesday 5 November at 1:10pm in St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church.

This is Year Two of the Galway Music Residency’s series celebrating the musical heritage of the European Union, which explores the string quartet repertoire from each of the 27 countries. Speakers from the featured nations will introduce each concert, sharing their personal responses to the chosen music.

This month, our guest speaker is the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Bulgaria to Ireland, Gergana Karadjova. We are honoured to have her presence here in Galway as she is a new appointment to Ireland, and as part of her welcome The Bulgarian Embassy will host a wine reception at the event.

ConTempo Quartet take us to Bulgaria with performances of Goleminov’s String Quartet No 3 and Tabakova’s On a Bench in the Shade.

Marin Goleminov was one of the most important composers in Bulgaria. He studied in Paris and taught at the Conservatory in Sofia. He died in Portugal in 2002. This quartet, ‘Old Bulgarian’, is one of his most dramatic works and was written during the troubled times of World War II. The influence of Bulgarian folk music can be heard in its rhythms.

Dobrinka Tabakova is a young Bulgarian composer living in London for the past 25 years.
She has won many international prizes for her work, and in 2017 was appointed composer-in-residence with the BBC Concert Orchestra. She has been called a ’name to watch’. This quartet, On a Bench in the Shade, imitates the contour of human speech as people gather to chat in the shade on a summer’s day.

Admission to this event is free and open to all, though early arrival is recommended.
From Europe with Love takes place on the first Tuesday of each month (September-June excepting January) until June 2021 as part of a three-year initiative.

We are delighted that The Port of Galway is the generous title sponsor of From Europe with Love.
The Galway Music Residency is proudly supported by NUI Galway (Education Partner), the Arts Council, GMIT, and Galway City and County Councils.
