New Writing Development Week

New Writing Development Week

Thursday, 8 June 2023, 5.00pm

The New Theatre in Dublin is now accepting full-length play scripts from emerging and mid-career playwrights for its annual New Writing Development Week. The event will be held in December 2023, following the success of the 2022 event. The selected plays will be performed by professional actors to a live audience and followed by audience engagement.

The theatre is seeking fresh voices, original ideas, and engaging themes for inclusion in the performed readings. Historical plays will be considered if they are relevant to current times. The scripts must be at least 55 minutes in reading time, with a minimum of 45 pages and a maximum of 70 pages. The submission must include a 150-word descriptive synopsis and a 100-word writer’s biography.

Writers can submit only one script per email, in PDF format to info [at] thenewtheatre.com - thenewtheatre1997 [at] gmail.com, with the subject “New Writing Development Week 2023”. The deadline for script submission is 5 pm on June 8th, 2023. The theatre will not respond to individual writers on scripts received due to the high volume of submissions. The writers selected will be contacted before the announcement date.

Selected writers will receive critical analysis feedback from the panel of dramaturgs and fellow artists. Audience members will also be encouraged to give anonymous feedback through tailored written feedback forms. If the play is selected for production in The New Theatre, the playwright will receive free dramaturgical support and development space.
