Context
MTU Cork School of Music (CSM), founded in 1878, is the oldest and largest conservatoire of music and drama in Ireland, with over 450 full-time students on its performing arts degree courses, and a further 2,000 students undertaking part-time conservatoire study. CSM is the leading conservatoire for music and drama in Ireland and prides itself on the holistic nature of its music and drama education, delivering career-focused programmes and equipping students with the skills required for success in the music and theatre industry. CSM is situated in the heart of Cork City centre, close to all the major arts venues and hosts approximately 400 performing events annually. The purpose-built and state-of-the-art building features a 385-seat concert hall, 110 seat theatre, 52 teaching and practice studios, a full recording studio and suite, 60 Steinway grand pianos, lecture theatres, 2 audio labs, an IT lab, and the Off-Quay Bistro.

The Head of MTU Cork School of Music (CSM) is a Senior Lecturer Grade III post within the University. The Head of CSM will be responsible for the strategic development of CSM as a modern Conservatoire within the new Technological University context, as well as providing overall management and administration of CSM. The Head of CSM will represent the interests of CSM at regional, national and international level. 

Location, Level and Relationship within Management Structure
The Head of CSM currently reports to the Head of Faculty of Business & Humanities.

The Head of CSM leads the School Executive Board, comprising Heads of Department/Senior Staff in the Departments of 

• Keyboard Studies
• Orchestral Studies
• Pop, Jazz, Trad, Voice & Theatre Studies
• Musicianship and Academic Studies 

The Head of CSM also liaises with the Facility Management Company, responsible for the CSM building as part of a public-private partnership, regarding operational and client-liaison matters. 

Duties & Responsibilities
The Head of CSM duties includes, but are not limited to:

• Providing academic leadership and scholarship and ensuring that the range of courses provided by CSM meets student, university, regional and national needs

• Playing a leading role in development, implementation and maintenance of quality assurance procedures at University and School level 

• Playing a pivotal role in fostering and developing research and scholarship

• Maintaining appropriate health and safety records and taking a proactive approach to developing a strong culture of health and safety, including responsibility for child protection in CSM

• Leading the School Executive Board, comprising Heads of Department/Senior Staff, in formulating and agreeing School policy, subject to University policy and procedures

• Directing and supervising, as appropriate, the work of members of staff of the School through the Heads of Department/Section/Function, including evaluating staff performance and taking responsibility for the academic standards of this work, acting in an advisory capacity and as a professional support in academic matters 

• Advising on, and participating in, recruitment of suitably qualified staff and managing, in consultation with relevant members of University management, the development and implementation of a staff development programme for the School 

• Maintaining appropriate School records; administering the School budget, and providing information and reports as required by the Head of Faculty/President 

• Overseeing the centralised timetabling process within the School 

• Teaching classes for up to 105 hours per annum and carrying out assessment, monitoring and evaluation of examination work and providing an academic and consultative support to the students in their learning activities

• Participating in central University-wide committees and meetings as required

• Participating in appropriate activities, including external activities, necessary to the development and promotion of the School and the University; advising on the promotion and marketing of the School and its courses and advising on student intake 

• Carrying out such other appropriate duties as may be assigned by the Head of Faculty and/or the President from time to time.

Key Skills and Competencies required for the role:

• Demonstrate relevant professional experience in performance / research / industry.

• Demonstrate excellent and proven managerial, leadership, interpersonal, communication and organisational skills.

• Possess ability to lead strategic planning, develop outreach and external engagement, cultivate cross campus relationships, and promote and market academic courses.

Qualification Requirements for role:
Minimum Qualifications

To be deemed qualified for this post an applicant must have: 

1. a relevant primary honours degree with First or Second-Class Honours from a recognised degree awarding authority 

OR 

2. An equivalent relevant professional qualification obtained through examination. 

AND 

3. Not less than 5 years of appropriate post-qualification experience. 

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to the minimum requirements outlined above it is desirable that candidates will have: 

1.     A post graduate qualification at Doctorate Level

2.     Experience of management in higher education and/or conservatory education as well as organisational, leadership, strategic planning and communication skills and experience. 

NOTE:

In addition to the minimum qualifications, it may be necessary to introduce further shortlisting criteria. Therefore, candidates may be shortlisted on the basis of qualifications and suitable experience, based on details given in the application form. Salary Scale:

€86,829.00 to €110,921.00 per annum.
