Trio Rodin, one of the most outstanding young Spanish ensembles of their generation, was founded in 2011 in Utrecht. Acclaimed by critics for their intensity, expressive and communicative style with the audience, Trio Rodin was awarded 1st Prize at “XI Chamber music competition Montserrat Alavedra” (Terrassa, Spain), as well as at the prestigious “Storioni Festival Prijs” (Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands). In describing ‘Nostalgic Tales’ the ensemble states that music can express feelings, emotions, experiences and even ideas in a way that words cannot. As a medium that flows in time, composers also tell stories through their music, sometimes by putting music to text, or referring to a real life event, but often in a more abstract form. In this programme musical tales of grief and nostalgia are all expressed differently. Starting with Mozart, who is generally seen as an ‘impersonal’ composer, but who sometimes lets us glimpse his personal feelings by the rare use of the minor key, as in this one-movement work. Pärt’s music expresses longing for order and simplicity in the world and nostalgia for the great music masters of the distant past. Malat’s Trio is dedicated to his close friend Camille Saint-Saëns and the emotionally gripping trio by Dvořák was written in the weeks after the death of his baby daughter.
