Sophie Cooper + Prangers + Tonia Ko

Sophie Cooper + Prangers + Tonia Ko

Saturday, 12 February 2022, 8.00pm

Sophie Cooper will be in residence for a week in Cafe OTO’s project space creating a new 8 speaker surround sound work.

Cooper will be using a combination of on site found radio sounds, processed trombone, electronics and voice to create a new piece that ruminates on broken family structures and the unspoken estrangement issue. This new piece is a continuation of exploration into this topic and follows on from her Ivor Composers Award nominated piece ‘Intact’ that was commissioned by hcmf// in 2019.

Tonia Ko is an American composer based in London since 2019. Her work has been recognised with a Guggenheim Fellowship and performed at HCMF and LSO St. Luke’s. She has collaborated with leading soloists and ensembles across a variety of media – in acoustic ensemble pieces, works with electronics, as well as her ongoing practice of transforming bubble wrap into a sound canvas.

Rochdale-based assembled field recordings, spoken word and found percussion create an industrial dubby mashup with a dark, heavy tone.
