The United Kingdom National Commission for UNESCO (UKNC) is currently seeking applications for a pro bono Non-Executive Director (NED) position, focusing on Culture. This role involves working closely with UNESCO’s land-based designations within the UK, the UK government, UNESCO, and its Member States, to promote and support the UK’s contributions to UNESCO. The ideal candidate will have expertise and experience in Cultural and Natural Heritage, particularly relating to UNESCO Biosphere Reserves, UNESCO Creative Cities, UNESCO Global Geoparks, and UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Responsibilities include advocating for the benefits of UNESCO designations, promoting intersectoral aspects of these designations, advising the UK Government on international opportunities, and overseeing key UKNC cultural projects. Applicants should have a broad understanding of UNESCO, experience in culture sector strategy and policy development, project management skills, and the ability to communicate effectively in English.

Desirable qualifications include experience with UNESCO or other international organisations, familiarity with awards/designation processes, expertise across multiple cultural and natural heritage fields, experience in international development, advisory roles, or governance within not-for-profit or charitable organisations, networking skills, and a successful fundraising track record.
