Music from Java
Join the NCH Gamelan Orchestra for an evening of Indonesian classical music from the island of Java. This concert will showcase the many different moods of Javanese gamelan music, from the mellow and beautiful ladrangs with their layers of voices and flutes, to the fast and lively virtuoso percussion of the lancarans. We are also delighted to welcome our very special guest, Irish soprano Elizabeth Hilliard, who will perform the world premiere of a new set of songs for soprano, gamelan and electronics, composed by ensemble director Dr. Peter Moran.

The NCH Gamelan Orchestra is an orchestra of bronze gongs and tuned percussion instruments, including a number of softer instruments such as bamboo flutes, plucked zithers, bowed rebabs and voices. These beautiful instruments were built at the behest of His Royal Highness Sultan Hamengkubuwono X of Yogyakarta, and presented to the Irish people at a ceremony in the National Concert Hall.
This summer the NCH Gamelan Orchestra will also be appearing at the Beyond the Pale festival, opening the main stage on Sunday 18th June at 12pm, and at the Kaleidoscope Festival on Saturday July 1st.
