NSO, Jaime Martín and Kirill Gerstein: Ian Wilson, Rachmaninov, Rimsky-Korsakov

Friday, 12 May 2023, 7.30pm

The National Symphony Orchestra, led by Chief Conductor Jaime Martín, will present a performance featuring renowned pianist Kirill Gerstein. The programme includes Ian Wilson's Man-o’-War, Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2, and Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade.

Pianist Kirill Gerstein, celebrated for his intelligent and virtuosic music-making, will perform Rachmaninov's Second Piano Concerto. This lyrical and passionate composition is known for its memorable melodies and was notably featured in David Lean's 1945 film Brief Encounter.

Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade, inspired by The Arabian Nights, weaves a spellbinding musical tapestry with its enchanting orchestration. The piece vividly conveys tales of romance, drama, and adventure through its skilful use of orchestral sections.

Ian Wilson's Man-o’-War captures the tumultuous experiences aboard a sail-driven warship with bold and evocative music. This imaginative composition functions as a soundtrack to an envisioned film, depicting the intensity of life at sea.

This concert will also take place in Leisureland, Galway on Saturday 13 May at 8 pm, in association with Music for Galway. For more information, visit www.musicforgalway.ie.
