Brilliant, joyous, uplifting are words constantly used in praise of J.S. Bach’s wonderful Easter Oratorio and Ascension Oratorio. Join the Guinness Choir, orchestra and soloists and let Bach carry you away on a cloud of joyful musical brilliance.

On Saturday 11th May 2019 at 8p.m. The Guinness Choir will be in the National Concert Hall, Dublin to perform the Easter Oratorio and the Ascension Oratorio by Johann Sebastian Bach together with his Motet Lobet den Herrn.

This programme provides the rare opportunity to hear both of these brilliant oratorios and this wonderful motet, in one performance. Such uplifting, joyous music clearly illustrates Bach’s ability to convey the fragility and vulnerability of humanity and yet fully reaffirms the wonder and excitement of life.

The programme sits comfortably between the celebration of Easter and the Ascension. Right from the start you have the brilliance of the orchestral introduction and the crisp articulation of the chorus of the Easter Oratorio.

Lobet den Herrn, though the shortest of Bach’s motets, is yet full of energy and invention and suggests almost shouts of joy in the closing Alleluia.

The concert is completed with the Ascension Oratorio, giving a deep sense of joy and delight.

Soloists:
Róisín O’Grady, Soprano
Carolyn Holt, Mezzo Soprano
Christopher Bowen, Tenor
John Molloy, Bass

About The Guinness Choir
The Guinness Choir was established in 1951 by Victor Leeson, who was a young member on the management staff of the Guinness Brewery in Dublin.

Early performances included the great oratorios of Bach and Handel, many of which were performed in Dublin for the first time. The Choir’s repertoire now encompasses many of the choral works of all the major composers from the 16th to 21st centuries, from Palestrina and Monteverdi through to Mahler, Poulenc, Britten, Stravinsky and Pärt.

David Milne has been our Musical Director since 1991.  With his musical knowledge and ability, the choir has continued to grow in stature and renown.  Recent remarkable events included our performance, in 2016, of Handel’s Messiah in the newly-rebuilt St. Mel’s Cathedral in Longford. Another exciting highlight of that year was the Choir’s participation on Easter Sunday in the choir of 1,000 voices, with the RTE Symphony Orchestra, in the RTE 1916 Commemoration concert of ‘A Nation’s Voice’ by Shaun Davey. In April 2018 we were delighted to sell-out the National Concert Hall for our performance of Bach’s mighty Mass in B Minor.

A wonderful and very successful recent initiative was to invite a special guest performer to join us at our annual Christmas Concert in St Patrick’s Cathedral. The great Paul Brady was our inaugural guest in December 2016 followed in 2017 by another of Ireland’s preeminent songwriters, Eleanor McEvoy and in December 2018 by Irish singer-songwriter Kathleen Turner.

When the Brewery withdrew its financial support in 2015, the choir was delighted to secure the financial sponsorship of two outstanding companies – DPS Engineering and the Spirit Motor Group, as well as new Patrons and Friends of the choir. And we are thrilled that the Rt. Hon. Earl of Iveagh, Edward Guinness, is our Honorary Patron.

Rehearsals: every Tuesday at 7.45p.m. at the Education Centre, Our Lady’s Hospice, Harold’s Cross, Dublin 4. For more info, please visit our website and email Valerie, Choir Secretary (details below).
