Johann Sebastian Bach: The Well-Tempered Clavier, Preludes and Fugues Nos 1-12, BWV 846-857

It was an idea only Bach could have conceived: to compose a collection of preludes and fugues for keyboard, circling through all 24 major and minor keys in turn. Bach envisioned the book as a teaching aid ‘for the use and profit of the musical youth’, but since then it has become one of the most influential works in the history of Western classical music.
