Jim Causley’s New Year Wassail

Jim Causley’s New Year Wassail

Saturday, 7 January 2023, 7.30pm

The tradition of wassailing goes way back for Jim Causley, who grew up in a wassailing village not far from Sidmouth Folk Festival. The songs (and the cider!) are part of the identity of Jim’s native county of Devon, where wassailing has marked the New Year for centuries.

With these traditions being in Jim’s roots, it seems only natural that wassailing songs have formed part of his repertoire, and Jim’s seasonal concerts have become an annual tradition of their own. When it came to planning our first concert of the New Year, this therefore seemed like the perfect way to begin 2023.

While wassailing typically involves heading out to an orchard or visiting friends from door to door, this year we’ll be bringing the wassail to you. Join Jim from the comfort of home, as he shares some of his favourite wassailing songs live to wherever you are.

ABOUT JIM CAUSLEY

Jim Causley is a folk singer, award winning songwriter, musician, proud Devonian and all-round entertainer. He started out singing with Wren Music, before heading to Newcastle University to study on their brand-new degree course in Folk & Traditional Music. He rose to prominence singing with The Devil’s Interval and Mawkin:Causley, as well as touring with Waterson:Carthy and David Rotheray. In recent years, his work has focused on his musical settings of poems by his relative Charles Causley, penning his own songs and reviving lost gems from his home county.
