Notes & Narratives - Nick Whitmer: The Rise & Fall of Piping in North America 1870 - 1940

Thursday, 19 May 2022, 8.30pm

This presentation will explore the period between the 1870s and the 1930s when there was a mini-golden age of uilleann piping activity in the United States. For a time there were an unusual number of players and a few instrument and reed makers to support them. Performance standards were high. By 1940 interest had withered away and only a few diehards remained. The presentation will look at this rise and fall, with lots of images and a surprise or two.

The talk will take place at Na Píobairí Uilleann, 15 Henrietta Street, Dublin 1, starting at 8:30pm on Thursday 19th May 2022. Admission is €10 (concession rate €5). Tickets are available through Eventbrite or contact the office at [email protected] or by phone +353-1-8730093. For those unable to attend in person, it will also be live streamed for free through our channel NPU-TV at https://pipers.ie/npu-tv/.

Na Píobairí Uilleann presents Notes & Narratives – a series of monthly performance-based lectures on traditional music, song and dance by some of Ireland’s finest traditional artists.
