WHAT IS BBC OPEN MUSIC?

BBC Open Music brings new creatives and musicians of all genres, styles and backgrounds from across the UK to the BBC; designed to develop new collaborations, exciting ideas and reflect today’s audiences in live orchestral music.

Experience training sessions, masterclasses, hands-on experience and mentoring to develop your skills, your voice and your ideas in one of the following areas:

  • Music*
  • Presenting
  • Radio and event production
  • Sound recording & engineering

Discover more about these four areas here.

All whilst getting the chance to work with the BBC Concert Orchestra, BBC Proms and other BBC teams in building, shaping, delivering (and possibly performing in!) a BBC Prom in 2022.

Participants will receive:

  • A matched mentor at the BBC from your discipline – including BBC presenters, production staff and sound engineers working on some of the biggest events at the BBC, and BBC Concert Orchestra musicians for those taking the music pathway
  • Bespoke opportunities depending on your area of interest including masterclasses, training days and hands-on experience to gain new skills
  • A chance to network, build contacts and form relationships across the radio and music industry

*Not restricted to orchestral musicians and open to all genres - applicants can be instrumentalists, mixed media artists, composers, writers, vocal performers or something not listed here (surprise us!). Applicants should have experience of group music-making or collaborating with musicians. Mentoring will focus on creative collaboration with an orchestra, rather than instrumental skills.

WHO DO WE WANT TO HEAR FROM?

There are up to 30 places available for individuals over the age of 18 (on our start date of 6 September 2021) from across the UK and we are particularly interested to hear from those from Black, Asian or ethnically diverse communities.

  • Do you want to build your knowledge, skills and contacts within the BBC and the radio and music industry?
  • Do you have a passion for sharing music with others?
  • Do you have a desire to learn, be curious and collaborate?

Then BBC Open Music could be a great fit for you.

You don’t need any formal qualifications or any experience of working with orchestras or orchestral music but an interest in the creative industries and audiences is essential. We’ll be looking to create a balanced group of participants across each of the four areas and selecting participants based on the three criteria above.
