Abendmusik: A Songbook of the Spirit
ABENDMUSIK: A SONGBOOK OF THE SPIRIT
Resurgam Choir (Mark Duley, dir.)
with Sagittarius Hiberniensis (Peter Barley, dir.)
and Thomond Ensemble (Andrew Jordan, dir.)
Presented in benefit of the Limerick Early Music Festival and Sagittarius Hiberniensis Choir
In collaboration with one of Ireland's newest Early Music organisations, H.I.P.S.T.E.R. Ireland (Historically Informed Performance Series, Teaching, Education, and Research) Resurgam choir is proud to present its first concert of the 2022 season, "A Songbook of the Spirit"—a programme featuring settings of the Psalms by two monumental composers of the seventeenth century, Claudio Monteverdi and Heinrich Schütz.
Featuring works from Monteverdi's Selva Morale e Spirituale (1641) and from Schütz's Symphoniarum sacrarum tertia pars (1650), the concert juxtaposes these exquisite psalm settings with instrumental sonatas by Monteverdi's contemporaries.
In this first Abendmusik concert of 2022, Resurgam joins forces with two new musical partners from Limerick. Resurgam's new partner choir Sagittarius Hiberniensis, under the direction of St Mary's Cathedral organist Peter Barley, returns after having performed a memorable concert with Resurgam last November. Limerick's new brasswinds chamber group the Thomond Ensemble (under the direction of Andrew Jordan) is the choir's newest collaborative partner, and Resurgam look forward to further collaborations with this talented group of professionals as they explore early repertoire, historically informed performance, and early brasswinds.
The first performance of "A Songbook of the Spirit" will take place at St Mary's Cathedral, Limerick, and the second performance of the programme will be at St Nicholas' Collegiate Church in Galway. The concerts are presented in benefit of the Limerick Early Music Festival and Sagittarius Hiberniensis, and a share of the proceeds will support both of these new Limerick-based organisations, who started up just before the pandemic and or only now able to present live performances.
