On Friday 25 June at 1pm, travel at the speed of sound to beautiful Greece as part of Galway Music Residency’s From Europe with Love. This ambitious 3-year project presents monthly lunchtime concerts exploring string quartet repertoire from all 27 EU member countries. The series, performed by ConTempo Quartet, draws to a close in December 2021. Friday’s celebration of Greek music will be available for FREE on Facebook and YouTube and can be watched back following the performance.

This lively concert, number 23 of 27 in the series, will feature works by well-known Greek composers Mikis Theodorakis and Nikos Skalkotta. Much of the programme consists of Greek dances or music inspired by the Greek dance tradition, none more famous that the title track from Zorba the Greek, the 1964 film based on the novel of the same name. Audiences will find it hard to resist dancing themselves as alluring melodies and rhythms unfold in this musical taste of Greece.

The event will be introduced by Dr. Natasha Remoundou, Lecturer in English Literature and Critical Theory at NUI Galway, who will give a personal reflection on the repertoire. Though a live audience is not possible, the lunchtime concert will be broadcast online (Facebook and YouTube) from the Mick Lally Theatre.
