Verdi Requiem / 84’
Heard one Requiem, heard them all? They’re all a little low-key and solemn. Not Verdi’s Requiem. It blazes against death in a work, one critic said, where “the prospect of Hell appears to rule”.
Make your peace with your maker seems to be the motto of one of the fiercest pieces an all classical music: a rousing, soul-stirring, spine-stiffening earthquake with heavy metal orchestra and chorus both turned up to 11!
It’s not all doom and gloom (although your inner Goth won’t be disappointed), there’s beauty too – no, really! – and the cut-crystal poetry and thunderous power of the voice is overwhelming enough to knock you off your feet. Our advice? Stay seated.
Heard at full throttle, the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra is not to be missed, especially when joined by the ever-wonderful RTÉ Philharmonic Choir and a crack quartet of solo voices under the experienced baton of conductor Michele Mariotti, who has ‘swiftly risen to prominence’ (New York Times).
A masterpiece you won’t forget, an experience you don’t want to miss.
