Surprises me every time

Why I gave the above rating:

According to Spotify, this was my most listened to album of 2019. The album was actually released in 2016 but I had, by then, gone away from Bon Iver after his first two albums, although for no particular reason (I also heard him in Galway in 2009). However, it was Spotify that brought him back into my listening. I noticed ’29 #Strafford APTS’ was one of his top 5 most popular tracks and soon I was exploring all of 22, A Million. The album has many beautiful moments, punctuated by noise art and voice effects, but it remains strange, distant and never truly lets you in, no matter how many times you listen to it. I feel its roaming artistic nature also encourages reflection, helping to create the mental space to just think. ’29 #Strafford APTS’ is still the best way into this album, but ’33 “GOD”’ and ‘715 - Creeks’ will soon find their way to you too. This album is such a considerable shift from For Emma, Forever Ago (2008) and Bon Iver (2011), it surprises me every time.
