Workshop: Rory Matheson (Piano) @ Belfast TradFest
Assynt born piano player, ‘BBC Young Traditional Musician of the Year Finalist ’Rory Matheson was brought up through the rich musical heartland of Scotland’s north-west coast. Growing up playing the accordion, he changed his hand to the piano during his teenage years, and found a passion for accompanying. While studying Traditional music at Glasgow’s prestigious Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, with top pianists Mary McCarthy and James Ross, he began exploring jazz and blues, developing his distinctively diverse melodic, harmonic and rhythmic musical palette. Rory is a founding member of Glasgow band TRIP and has recently joined Orkney fiddle trio FARA, as well as performing with several artists including Hannah Rarity, and The Gary Innes Band.
The Winter Weekend’s team of tutors is made up of internationally renowned performers with proven track records as teachers and educationalists. The primary means of teaching and learning will be ‘by ear’ with an emphasis in the less experienced classes of assisting pupils to develop oral/aural skills in addition to instrumental competency and developing core repertoire.
All classes are designed for intermediate to advanced (minimum 2 years instrument experience) adults and children over 6 years of age, with the exception of the Traditional Singing Classes (no experience required) and Whistle & Sing.
N.B. You are invited to bring your own keyboard to this workshop.
