MOZART & HARTMANN
Mozart Symphony No. 38 KV 504 Prague
Hartmann Violin Concerto, Op.19 (Funereal Concerto)
Mozart Symphony No. 40 in G minor, K.550

The ICO showcase two of Mozart’s great symphonies. The city of Prague was the catalyst for Mozart’s bright and boisterous Symphony No. 38 a deeply expressive, boundary-pushing drama, brimming with energy. His emotive Symphony No. 40, adored by audiences, reflects Mozart’s personal struggles. The gorgeous second movement, sees the strings woven closely together – as in the love duets of Italian operas of that time. In between, Hartmann’s Concerto Funebre is a powerful and extraordinary work, which reacts to the tragic events of World War 2 and the occupation of Czechoslovakia. It holds conflicting messages of hope, desperation, and fear for what lies ahead. Thomas Zehetmair ignites this thought-provoking work.
