Masterclass with Richard O'Donnell, tuned percussion

This spring, the National Concert Hall will host a series of weekly online masterclasses by well-known musicians.

Each masterclass will be livestreamed on the National Concert Hall’s YouTube and Facebook channels giving aspiring musicians in Ireland access to tuition and further development. There will also be an opportunity to engage with the tutors via live chat.

Richard O’Donnell was the Section Leader, Principal Percussion of the RTE National Symphony Orchestra from 1997-2020. Previous to this, he was a member of the RTE Concert Orchestra, The National Symphony Orchestra of Colombia, and the Basque National Orchestra in San Sebastian, Spain. He has appeared as an orchestral soloist on numerous occasions with each of these orchestras and with these orchestras alone has performed on over 100 commercial CD’s.

In the field of education, Richard is Professor of Percussion at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, where in addition to teaching, he also directs the percussion ensemble and is the founder and director of the annual RIAM DAY of Percussion. As well as commissioning over 20 new Irish works for percussion ensemble, Richard has led the ensemble on 25 international tours to the USA, South America and Europe. In addition Richard is the percussion tutor for the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland, teaches a module on the Trinity College B Mus Ed degree and the RIAM Diploma in Community Music.

Outside of the orchestra, Richard has been particularly active as a performer in the field of contemporary music. He was a member of Concorde for over 25 years and in addition has performed with the Crash Ensemble, Vox21, as well as various freelance ensembles. Currently, Richard is the Music Director of the new music group, ”PARABASIS”, and is a Musician in Residence for Trinity College’s M Phil in Composition programme.
Many of Richard’s students have particularly successful careers in music and currently have positions in the RTE National Symphony Orchestra, RTE Concert Orchestra, the Army #1 Band, the Garda Band and in orchestras and Universities in Germany and South America.

Richard holds an M Mus from Brooklyn College of the City University of New York and a B Mus from Indiana University in the USA.
