Playford Dance Workshop @ Galway Early Music Festival 2019
Performers Felicity Maxwell and The York Waits.
In 1651, John Playford published a book entitled The English Dancing Master, which gave both the music and the figures of popular dances of the period. The book proved so successful that he and his successors published new editions with additional dances until c1728, while the dances remained popular all through the 18th and into the 19th century.
These popular dances are the ancestors of our modern céilí dances, and forms of these dances were found not only in these islands, but all over Europe. In the collection, there are English, Scottish and Irish tunes and dances, as well as a few with more exotic connections.
The York Waits provide the best of dance music, guaranteed to get your feet moving!
Open to all. No previous experience necessary. This is an adult workshop. Children over 10 welcome, with parental supervision.
